Friday February 3, 2006 – Dialogue on the Two World Systems
Scott Anttila & Bob Moler: Galileo's Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems
An audio podcast (MP3) of the Dialogue recorded live.
Scott (Salviati) defends the heliocentric model of the universe, Bob (Simplicio) the geocentric universe. Scott provides the introduction, and a PowerPoint presentation created by Melissa Brooke, who was unable to make the meeting due to illness.
Note the debate, though planned to some extent, is spontaneous. Bob's strategy is: When that facts are against you... Attack! The experiment of dropping heavy and light objects that is heard, is mocking Galileo's famous Tower of Pisa experiment. Bob used a mouse pad and a large ball. The fix was in: The mouse pad, slowed by air resistance by falling flat, was beaten to the ground by the ball. He was happy that Scott didn't point that out.
